Service description

Hackney Portage Service is managed by the Educational Psychology Service and is part funded by Hackney Learning Trust and the Children’s Centres. We consist of 4.2 Portage Home Visitors.

We are an educational home-visiting service which offers parental education, support and advice to families who have a pre-school child with additional needs. This service works in partnership with parents to come to an understanding of their child’s development and offer practical ideas, strategies and appropriate toys and materials to promote developmental progress.

Portage works closely with health professionals and provides support with benefits, key working and statutory assessment processes, providing a transition package for children into playgroups or nurseries. Portage also works with Children’s Centres, promoting inclusion for children, and with specialist schools, providing an informal and fun introduction to the provisions.

Home visits are offered five days a week. There is;

  • a drop-in for Portage children either receiving regular visits or on the waiting list every Monday during term-time at Hackney Ark, between 1pm – 4pm.
  • a Sensory Stay and Play Session every other Tuesday morning at a specialist school for children with Autism, for Portage children with social communication and interaction concerns.
  • a Sensory Stay and Play Session every other Wednesday afternoon at a specialist school for children with PMLD/SLD, for Portage children of similar needs to the schools remit.

How to refer; there is a Multi-Agency Referral System that consists of Health and Educational professionals (including Portage) which meets regularly at Hackney Ark, the local Children’s Development Centre. We also have an open referral system for Portage.

Please contact the team for a referral form.
